CALL TO ACTION

Everyone is a digital citizen: people use technologies to express themselves, to engage with other people, express their views. But to navigate in the digital environment, some values, skills and attitudes are required. For instance, engaging in the digital environment should imply respecting inclusive and democratic values, human rights and the rule of law, knowledge of privacy and safety issues, awareness of opportunities and of risks associated with the digital environment.

Digital Citizenship Education helps build inclusive and democratic societies through the development of core competences. Mainstreaming digital citizenship education in all education settings is a way to help renew our democracies and the engagement of citizens in their communities and societies. It’s a way to leverage the potential of technologies as an enabler of opportunities to actively engage with others, through the respect of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

The European Year of Digital Citizenship Education 2025 will call for action in the Council of Europe member states and will aim to reach out to all different target audiences: Ministries, policy makers, educators, young learners and young adult learners, civil society including youth-led organisations, private sector, academia, media and the general public. The European Year 2025 is a unique opportunity to highlight the importance of digital citizenship education and its potential in empowering all learners with the necessary skills to engage in the digital environment as active citizens.
